Man charged with reckless murder for alcohol-related interstate fatality

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Montgomery Police say alcohol was involved in a fatal traffic accident on Thursday that claimed the life of a Montgomery woman. Authorities have now arrested the driver of that vehicle and charged him with reckless murder.

Authorities responded to a fatal crash on I-85 northbound at the Perry Hill Road exit shortly before midnight on October 18. The passenger of the vehicle, 21-year-old Latisha Henderson died as a result of injuries she sustained in the crash. The driver, 30-year-old Darren Williams and an infant also in the vehicle were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

MPD's initial investigation indicated the vehicle lost control and struck the concrete divider. Accident investigators later determined the cause of the crash was alcohol-related. Williams, the diver of the vehicle, was charged with one count of reckless murder shortly after his release from the hospital.

Alabama State Troopers Remind Motorists of School Bus Safety

Alabama State Troopers Remind Motorists of School Bus Safety

It is a priority year-round, but school bus safety is particularly important during the school year, when motorists come into contact with school buses on a daily basis.

This year, School Bus Safety Week is Oct. 22 to 26, and the Alabama Department of Public Safety is partnering with the Alabama Department of Education to remind motorists of the law and what is required in an effort to prevent crashes, injuries and fatalities.  In 2011, there were 546 crashes, 268 injuries and five fatalities involving school buses in Alabama.

Motorists may be aware that the law requires all traffic from both directions on a two-lane roadway to stop when school buses stop for passengers, but there also are rules to ensure safety in other situations.

Traffic from both directions must also stop for school buses on:

• Roadways with two lanes and a center turning lane

• Roadways with four or more lanes and a center turning lane
