Gov. Bentley announces new road and bridge projects as part of ATRIP initiative

Governor Robert Bentley on Monday announced the approval of 302 additional road and bridge projects, the largest number of projects announced to date under the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program (ATRIP).

With Monday’s announcement, a total of 439 road and bridge projects have been announced since Governor Bentley formally unveiled his ATRIP initiative in March of 2012.  ATRIP is the largest road and bridge improvement program in Alabama’s history. 

“Everyone benefits from ATRIP,” Governor Bentley said.  “We’re improving public safety by replacing old bridges and repairing and widening outdated roads.  ATRIP also helps create jobs.  When companies build new facilities, they look for areas with good roads and bridges.  ATRIP is giving them what they need.  The more companies that build and expand in Alabama, the more jobs we’re able to create.”

South Carolina man dies from injuries sustained in Jan. 15 crash

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Alabama State Troopers say a South Carolina man has died as a result of the injuries he sustained in a crash on U.S. 231 on Jan. 15.

Authorities say 63-year-old Williamston, SC resident, Charles Roy Street, died Saturday from injuries he sustained in an accident on Tuesday, January 15.

Troopers say Street sustained the injuries when the 2012 Freightliner he was driving left the roadway on U.S. 231 at the 97 mile marker, went down an embankment and struck a tree.

No additional information is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.

The Alabama Department of Transportation would like to remind motorists that they can check the conditions of Alabama’s state and federal highways on the Road Conditions page of the ALDOT Web site

ALDOT has made preparations and mobilized personnel and resources across the state to respond to icy bridge/road conditions and other adverse impacts from the winter storm. ALDOT will continue to monitor the roadways to make our highways as safe as possible.

Motorists are urged to drive with caution and be alert for work zones and highway maintenance personnel.

Maxwell AFB exercise may affect traffic, gate access

Visitors to Maxwell Air Force Base and Gunter Annex might experience delays at the bases’ gates during the week of Jan. 14 as the base conducts an “active shooter” exercise and other exercise scenarios.

Military bases conduct active shooter exercises to monitor base personnel and emergency response teams’ ability to react to reports of a gunman on the installation.

Base officials are asking people who have business on Maxwell or Gunter to plan accordingly and exercise patience.

Maxwell and Gunter hold periodic exercises to ensure base personnel are prepared to respond in cases of natural disasters, accidents, and other emergencies.

MPD initiative targets traffic safety

The Montgomery Police Department will begin special traffic enforcement details next week to help increase safety on roadways throughout the city.

The details, announced during Mayor Todd Strange’s media briefing earlier this week,  will target driving behaviors that contribute to motor vehicle crashes and crash severity, according to Maj. Keith Barnett, commander of MPD’s Traffic Division.

Barnett said the first traffic safety saturation details will take place during peak traffic periods next week, with enforcement focused on major thoroughfares, including Interstates 65 and 85.

“Our mission is safety on the roadways for the motoring public and for pedestrians alike,” said Barnett.

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - If you plan on heading downtown today, be aware that Ripley Street between Madison Avenue and Monroe Street is closed due to a water main break.

This portion of Ripley Street is expected to remain closed for most of the day.
