I-85/Perry Hill Road interchange improvement project set to begin next week

The project to construct a new entrance ramp to I-85 North that will help ease traffic congestion on Perry Hill Road, is scheduled to begin next week, the Alabama Department of Transportation announced today.

The $8.4 million interchange improvement project on I-85 at Perry Hill Road (Exit 4) will include bridge widening, additional lanes and new traffic signals. The project is slated to begin March 4, weather permitting, and is estimated to be completed by November 2014.

Expected impact to traffic will be during evening lane shifts and lane closures on I-85 and Perry Hill Road, Sundays through Thursdays. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes and avoid travel in the area if possible during construction.

The Montgomery Police Department will strictly enforce the 45 mph work zone speed limit on I-85.

AG announces $29 million settlement with Toyota

Attorney General Luther Strange today joined 29 other states in announcing a $29 million settlement with Toyota Motor Corporation and its related North America entities over allegations that Toyota concealed safety issues related to unintended acceleration.

Toyota agreed to pay $29 million to settle consumer protection claims and has agreed to provide additional restitution and incentives to vehicle owners to promote compliance with unintended acceleration safety recalls.

Norman Bridge Road construction may cause traffic delays

Due to road construction, the area of Norman Bridge Road between Delano and Ogden is being reduced to two lanes of traffic, one southbound and one northbound lane.

Commuters are encouaged to use caution in this area and plan an alternate route. This area is expected to remain reduced to two lanes until late Wednesday afternoon.

Montgomery County EMA warns residents in low-lying areas to take precautionary measures

The Montgomery City/County Emergency Management Agency advises that the Montgomery area remains under a flash flood warning that was issued initially at 7:15 a.m. Monday and extended until Feb. 13. The northern portion of Montgomery County was placed under a flash flood warning at approximately 1:30 a.m. Monday.

The Montgomery area has had seven reports of flooding issues due to debris-clogged drainage areas. There have been no reports of damage to structures.

Due to the amount of rainfall, the Alabama River and Catoma Creek are expected to crest Tuesday, Feb. 12. The Alabama River’s latest observation was 28.65 feet and rising. It is expected to crest at 32 feet by 1 p.m. Tuesday without reaching flood stage (35 feet). The river is then expected to start receding slowly after cresting. Catoma Creek’s latest observation was at 17.1 feet and expected to crest at 21.9 feet by 1 p.m. Tuesday without reaching flood stage (25 feet), before slowly receding.

Preliminary data from crashes investigated by Alabama State Troopers indicates 59 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2012 were not wearing seat belts the time of their deaths state officials announced today.

For 2012, 514 people died in crashes investigated by troopers on Alabama’s rural, state, U.S. and interstate highways. Of those, 424 were in vehicles where seat belts were available, and 251 were not wearing seat belts. Crash data from crashes investigated by local law enforcement won’t be compiled until later this year, so the total number of fatalities, including the percentage not wearing seat belts is expected the climb even higher.

According to preliminary traffic crash data, there were 36 people killed in vehicle crashes investigated by state troopers in Alabama in January of 2013.

Accident slows traffic on North Eastern Boulevard

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - All lanes of the North Eastern Boulevard are open following an accident near the Lagoon Park Business Loop this morning.

An SUV and car collided, resulting in one injury.

Traffic was slow while southbound lanes of the Northern Boulevard at Walter Craig were closed following the accident.

Bicyclist struck by MATS bus while crossing downtown street

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - According to the Montgomery Police Department, an adult male riding a bicycle was struck by a city bus downtown on Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities say the cyclist was crossing the road - not at an intersection or in a crosswalk- on Molton Street at Maxwell Blvd. when he was struck by a MATS bus.

The cyclist received what appeared to be minor injuries.
