Top-ranked AUM men's tennis wins sixth straight with victory at Shorter

The No. 1 Auburn Montgomery men’s tennis team won its sixth consecutive match to close out its regular season, as the Warhawks defeated Shorter 9-0 Saturday.

With the win, the Warhawks improved to 16-3 on the season, while the Hawks fell to 8-9 overall.

AUM took control of the match in doubles play, dropping only 10 games in the three combined matches. The duos of Othmane Lalami and Josh Reason at the No. 2 position and Nicolas Pinones-Haltenhoff and Miguel Grifol at the third spot, each won by scores of 8-4. Tim Hewitt and Bence Toth cruised at the top doubles flight by a score of 8-2.

In singles, Hewitt, Toth, Grifol, Lalami and Reason all won in straight sets, while Pinones-Haltenhoff dropped the middle set at the No.

No. 7 Warhawks softball rally in game 1, earn shutout in game 2 against Southern Wesleyan

The seventh-ranked Auburn Montgomery softball team continued its stellar pitching over the weekend, failing to allow an earned run in a doubleheader sweep over Southern Wesleyan.

The Warhawks took Game 1 by a 3-1 score, scoring all three runs in the seventh inning. Haley Johnson led off with a triple, scoring on a throwing error, and Laci Driggers smashed a two-run homer to left to give AUM the lead.

Cassie Daniels (15-1) struck out 12 and allowed no earned runs in the opener. Taylor Powell and Kayla Hale then combined on a four-hitter in a 5-0 Game 2 win.
AUM (35-5, 12-4 SSAC) has now won eight straight games, while Southern Wesleyan dropped to 23-19 and 8-12 in the Southern States Athletic Conference.

“I thought our pitchers did a great job today,” head coach Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “They came out and kept us in the ballgames until we could make adjustments at the plate offensively. We’re not used to seeing a lot of off-speed pitching.

No. 3 Warhawks women's tennis rebounds for 7-2 win at Shorter

The third-ranked Auburn Montgomery women’s tennis team rebounded from a short-handed loss yesterday to defeat Shorter University on Saturday by a score of 7-2.

With the win, the Warhawks improved to 11-8 on the season, while the Hawks fell to 12-6 overall.

AUM took all three doubles matches, as it dropped just four games at the first two positions. Jade Curtis and Tiffany William rolled at the top spot, 8-3, while Maria Vargas and Morgane Zowczak cruised to an 8-1 win. Hagar Caro and Chanel Cunningham completed the sweep with a 9-8 (7-5) win at the third flight.

In singles, the Warhawks captured four points, as Curtis, William, Cunningham and Zowczak all rolled in straight set.

AUM will return to action next week, when it participates in the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament, played from April 18-20 at Lagoon Park.

Warhawks baseball rebounds to sweep doubleheader at Brewton-Parker

One night after dropping a 2-1 contest, the Auburn Montgomery baseball team outscored Brewton-Parker 26-5 and swept Saturday’s doubleheader at Barons Field.

AUM (27-16-1, 13-11 SSAC) took the opener 10-1, while taking the rubber game 16-4 in eighth innings. With the loss, the Barons fell to 22-16 overall and 12-9 in league play.

“Today our guys really stepped up when they had their backs against the wall,” head coach Q.V. Lowe said. “They could have come to the park today and caved in, especially being on the road, but they showed their true toughness. I can’t say enough about the way Daniel (Farrar) came in and threw today. This is the second week that he has come in and done an outstanding job for us. We had good approaches at the plate and really hit the ball well as a team.”

The Warhawks finished the doubleheader with 26 hits, led by Branden Kelley’s five in the twin bill. Hayden Hillyer, Josh Thompson and Chad Mansmann finished with four hits each.

The Auburn Montgomery baseball team played to a 5-5 tie against the University of North Alabama on Wednesday, as the game was called after eight innings due to darkness.

Darkness became an issue in the contest after a transformer blew on a light stand down the third base line during the fifth inning.

As a result of the tie, the Warhawks’ record now sits at 25-15-1, while the Lions are 20-16-1.

Hayden Hillyer led AUM with two of its 10 hits. Josh Thompson, Brett Wellman and Brandon Pooler each collected RBIs, while Thompson scored twice.

The Warhawks took the lead in the second inning, scoring twice behind run-scoring singles by Thompson and Wellman.

However, the Lions took advantage of a pair of errors by the Warhawks and plated five unearned runs during their next two at bats against starter Spencer Youmans.

Huntingdon men's tennis closes season with win at LaGrange

The Huntingdon men’s tennis team beat LaGrange 8-1 on Wednesday to close the 2013 season with a 13-5 record.
 
The Hawks swept all three doubles matches and won five singles matches in straight sets. Tyler Creamer (No. 3) and Tyler Chaffee (No. 5) won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0. Bobby Foroughian (No. 1), Zac Baldwin (No. 2) and Larry Pritchett (No. 4) won Huntingdon’s other three singles matches.
  
The teams of Foroughian-Baldwin (No. 1), Creamer-Pritchett (No. 2) and Trey Pirtle-Chaffee (No. 3) earned the Hawks’ doubles wins.
 
For Pritchett, the Hawks’ lone senior, it was a good way to end his Huntingdon career. 
 
“Tennis has been a big part of my life for a long time,” Pritchett said. “It meant a lot to win my final singles and doubles matches at home last weekend and it means a lot to win these two. I’m glad I have a good memory to end on.”

AUM softball falls one spot to seventh in NAIA Top 25 poll

After a 3-3 week in Southern States Athletic Conference play, the Auburn Montgomery softball team dropped one spot to No. 7 in the fourth NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 poll of the season. The rankings were released prior to AUM’s doubleheader sweep of Faulkner last night.

The Warhawks (30-5, 8-4 SSAC) rebounded from an 0-2 start last week to take three out of four games over ranked opponents Belhaven and William Carey. The Blazers are 10th in this week’s poll, while the Crusaders are 12th.

Katie Spain leads AUM with a .443 batting average, 12 home runs, 43 RBIs and 11 doubles. Kayla Hale (33) and Jyssica Pepper (31) have also driven in over 30 runs. Cassie Daniels leads the pitching staff with a 13-1 record and a 1.85 ERA. She has struck out 130 batters in 94 2/3 innings.

Concordia (Calif.) held on to the top spot for the fourth consecutive week, earning 18 of 20 first place votes.
