Franks earns ninth Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award

Auburn Montgomery senior Eran Franks was selected the ninth recipient of the Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award for the 2012-13 school year on Wednesday, for his efforts both on and off the baseball field.

Criteria for the Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award includes being certified for eligibility and involved in participation of a varsity sport; performance on the field or court during the previous two weeks; contributions to the team's success through their individual leadership skills, their commitment to teamwork, their extra effort during practice and their demonstration of sportsmanship; and performance off the field of play, including academic success, character and exemplary community outreach.

During the two weeks of his nomination, Franks helped the Warhawks to a 5-1 mark, with all six games counting toward the Southern States Athletic Conference standings.

AUM men's tennis drops to second NAIA Coaches' Top 25 poll

The Auburn Montgomery men’s tennis team is currently on a six-match winning streak, but the Warhawks lost their No. 1 spot in the fifth NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 poll, released yesterday by the national office.

Embry-Riddle moved back into the top position for the first time since March 5 after picking up victories over Lynn and Rollins, both of which are ranked in the top 10 of NCAA Division II. The Eagles received 334 points, one above AUM, and five first place votes.

The Warhawks and third-ranked Vanguard each earned four first place votes. The top three programs are separated by a total of five points. Westmont and Xavier (La.) round out the top five.

Games for AUM baseball series at Southern Wesleyan adjusted

With the likelihood of heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours, the Auburn Montgomery baseball team has announced changes to its Southern States Athletic Conference series at Southern Wesleyan this weekend.

Originally schedule to be played Friday and Saturday, the Warhawks (28-17-1, 13-11 SSAC) and Warriors (18-28, 7-17 SSAC) will now play the doubleheader of the series at 12 p.m. CST on Saturday, April 20. The single nine-inning game will be played Sunday at 1 p.m.

Huntingdon softball claims regular-season GSAC title

Lauren Welch hit a grand slam in Game 1 and Brittany Richardson ended Huntingdon’s 7-3 and 11-3 sweep of Agnes Scott with a solo home run in Game 2.
 
The Lady Hawks (21-9, 14-0 Great South Athletic Conference) locked up the regular-season conference title with the wins. Huntingdon, which has won 18 straight conference games and 32 of its last 33 conference games, will close out the regular season on Saturday with a conference doubleheader at Salem.
 
Huntingdon totaled 23 hits in Wednesday’s doubleheader. The Lady Hawks used a six-run fifth inning to take control of Game 1 and scored in every inning in Game 2.
 
Welch finished with five RBIs and two runs in the doubleheader. Her grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning gave Huntingdon a 6-0 lead in the first game. Richardson was 5-for-7 on the day with three RBIs and two runs.

Huntingdon softball sweeps Covenant on Senior Day

The Huntingdon softball team remained unbeaten in conference play with a sweep of Covenant College on Tuesday. The Lady Hawks celebrated Senior Day with a pair of five-inning, 10-2 victories.
 
After a 0-6 start this season, Huntingdon (19-9, 12-0 Great South Athletic Conference) has won 19 of its last 22 games. Going back to last season, Huntingdon has won 16 straight conference games and 30 of its last 31 conference games.
 
On Tuesday, freshman Halleigh DiNicholas hit her third and fourth home runs of the season in the second game. DiNicholas hit a two-run homer in the first inning and another two-run homer in the fifth inning.

Huntingdon baseball completes season sweep of Birmingham-Southern

Keegan Lambeth and Seth Currie drove in five runs and Huntingdon’s pitching and defense took care of the rest as the Hawks beat Birmingham-Southern 5-4 on Tuesday.
 
The win capped a season-sweep of the Panthers. The Hawks (24-9) beat Birmingham-Southern (25-12) 4-3 and 4-1 earlier this season.
 
Lambeth smashed a three-run home run in the first inning for a 3-1 lead and Currie hit a two-run single in the sixth for a 5-2 lead. The Panthers rallied with two runs in the seventh inning before closer Neil Lawler took the mound for the final three innings.
 
Lawler entered the game in the seventh inning with a 5-4 lead, runners on first and second and no outs. The junior worked his way out of the seventh without giving up a run and only allowed one batter to reach base in the eighth.
 
In the ninth, the Panthers managed a triple with one out.

Huntingdon women's golf finishes 4th in Rhodes Invitational

The Huntingdon women’s golf team shot its best round of the spring on Tuesday to close out the Rhodes Invitational in fourth place.
 
Huntingdon shot 339 on Tuesday and finished the tournament with a two-round score of 689. Centre College was first at 611, Rhodes College was second at 643 and California Lutheran was third at 680.
 
Centre College’s Whitney Miller was the individual champion with a 36-hole total of 148. Ali Hamil led Huntingdon with a 163, Saem Hur followed with a 167, Sydney Robbins shot 173, Jessie Culey shot 189 and Shay Roberson finished with a 190.
