AUM softball falls back to seventh in latest NAIA Top 25 poll

Despite a 3-1 week against top 15 opponents, the Auburn Montgomery softball team continued its familiar rotation between sixth and seventh in the NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 poll.

The Warhawks dropped to seventh in the sixth edition of the rankings, receiving a total of 453 points. AUM has placed sixth or seventh in each of the last five polls.

Concordia (Calif.) maintained its stranglehold on the top spot, garnering 560 points and 19-of-20 first place votes. Lubbock Christian also held onto the second position. Lee and Williams Baptist each moved up one spot to third and fourth, respectively, while Cal State San Marcos fell from third to fifth.

AUM captures ninth straight SSAC crown with 5-1 win against Belhaven

The Auburn Montgomery men’s tennis team won its ninth consecutive Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament championship on Monday with a 5-1 victory over No. 14 Belhaven.

With the win, the Warhawks (18-3) earned the SSAC's automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship. AUM, which owns nine NAIA National Championships, will be making its 21st all-time appearance and ninth consecutive in the national tournament.

In the championship match, the Warhawks collected a pair of points during the doubles portion, winning at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.

Despite dropping the first game, the tandem of Nicolas Pinones-Haltenhoff and Miguel Grifol responded by winning eight consecutive games to clinch an 8-1 win over Daniel Prado and Enrico Patriarca at the third spot. Tim Hewitt and Bence Toth rolled at the No. 1 position, winning their first seven games, before settling for a similar 8-1 victory over Nikita Lisov and Andres Yepez.

AUM's Morgane Zowczak named SSAC Player of the Week

Auburn Montgomery senior Morgane Zowczak earned her first Southern States Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week award of the season after helping the Warhawks to their seventh straight SSAC title.

The Yutz, France, native went a perfect 3-0 across singles and doubles during AUM’s victories over fifth-ranked William Carey and second-ranked Brenau. Zowczak and partner Hagar Caro registered a crucial 9-8 win at No. 3 doubles against Brenau in the championship match, giving the Warhawks a 2-1 advantage heading into singles.

Zowczak then picked up a straight-set victory at No. 3 singles, defeating 40th-ranked Maria Perdomo Medina 6-0, 6-4. She is now 7-2 in singles and 8-1 in doubles this season. The Warhawks are 4-1 since she returned from an injury earlier this month.

AUM received half of the 10 player of the week awards this season. Three-time winner Jade Curtis and Tiffany William have also been recognized by the SSAC.

AUM's Cassie Daniels earns 4th SSAC Pitcher of the Week award

For the second consecutive week and fourth time overall, Auburn Montgomery sophomore Cassie Daniels was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week after a pair of dominant performances against ranked opponents.

On Saturday, Daniels tossed her first career no-hitter against ninth-ranked Belhaven, leading AUM to a 2-0 victory. She struck out nine batters in her fifth complete game shutout of the season.

Daniels continued her impressive weekend the following afternoon versus 14th-ranked William Carey, limiting the Crusaders to one run in another complete game effort. She surrendered seven hits while striking out seven. The victory moved her to 17-1 this season, setting a new AUM single-season record for wins.

Hawks rally in bottom of 10th for win over Point University

The Huntingdon baseball team rallied to beat Point University 8-7 in 10 innings on Wednesday night.
 
It was the Hawks’ 14th straight win at Posey Field. With three road games remaining this weekend, Huntingdon (28-9) closes the regular season with an 18-1 record at home this season.
 
In Wednesday’s win, Trammell DeJarnett scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game 7-7 and Caleb Astin drew a bases-loaded walk to score Grant Brown in the bottom of the 10th for the win.
 
The Hawks, who played a total of 20 players in the game, built a 5-0 lead early before falling behind 7-6 in the eighth inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Cameron Lewis singled with one out and DeJarnett came in to run for Lewis.

Huntingdon softball closes out conference play unbeaten

The Huntingdon softball team closed out the regular season with a pair of 11-4 wins over Salem College on Saturday.
 
Huntingdon (23-9, 16-0 Great South Athletic Conference) has won 23 of its last 26 games this season and 20 straight GSAC games dating to last season. Entering the conference tournament next week, Huntingdon has won 34 of its last 35 conference games.
 
In Saturday’s sweep, the Lady Hawks finished with 21 hits and three home runs. Brittany Richardson was 5-for-7 on the day with four runs and a RBI and Lauren Welch was 3-for-7 with a two-run homer, four RBIs and three runs.
 
Holly Ostrander hit a solo home run, drove in two runs and scored three runs and Halleigh DiNicholas hit a two-run home run and finished with two RBIs and three runs.

New club forming beginning May 15, 2013 at the MASDA Center at 2201 Chestnut Street, Montgomery at 1:30 pm till 4:30pm. Current dancers, previous dancers, non-dancers are invited. Will provide instruction for non-dancers. Get off the couch and come join us for an afternoon of fun. We will meet weekly if club forms.
