Three Huntingdon Hawks earn All-Region honors

Huntingdon defensive tackle D.J. Chappell made an impression this season.

A dominant force from the start, Chappell drew extra attention from opposing teams. The junior’s play also drew attention from D3football.com.  

With the release of the D3football.com All-South Region Team on Monday, Chappell became the first Huntingdon player to earn first-team All-Region recognition.

“It’s an honor,” Chappell said. “Just to be chosen is a big accomplishment. But to be the first Huntingdon player to earn first-team, that’s cool. None of it would be possible without my teammates though.

AUM's K.C. Hewitt earns NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors

Auburn University at Montgomery senior women’s soccer defender K.C. Hewitt has been named a 2011 Daktronics-NAIA Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics announced Monday.

Hewitt, a native of Peachtree City, Ga., was one of 485 women’s soccer student-athletes to earn the honor across the nation.

Student-athletes are nominated by their institution’s head coach and must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status in order qualify for the honor.

Hewitt sports a 3.6 GPA, while majoring in psychology. She is also a three-time member of the Southern States Athletic Conference’s All-Academic team. On the field, she finished her senior season with a pair of goals and two assists.

Statewide gymnastics meet this weekend!

Gymnasts from all over Alabama will converge in Ozark this weekend for the Alabama USAG compulsory meet.  It will be held at the Ozark Civic Center beginning on Friday, December 2nd and will continue until Sunday, December 4th.

Admission to the meet is $5 for adults, $3 for children six years and older and free for children ages five and under.

Huntingdon men's basketball loses at 19th ranked Birmingham Southern

The Huntingdon men’s basketball team started strong Wednesday night.

But 19th-ranked Birmingham-Southern took the lead shortly before halftime and never trailed again. The Panthers controlled the second half and won 93-75.   

This was the second meeting between the two teams in five games. Birmingham-Southern (5-0) edged Huntingdon (0-5) by two points in the season opener at Roland Arena.

On Wednesday, the Hawks led for much of the first half.

Russell earns fifth 2011-12 Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award

Auburn University at Montgomery freshman cross country standout Adam Russell was selected the fifth recipient of the Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award for the 2011-12 school year on Monday, for his efforts both on and off the course.

Criteria for the Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award includes being certified for eligibility and involved in participation of a varsity sport; performance on the field or court during the previous two weeks; contributions to the team’s success through their individual leadership skills, their commitment to teamwork, their extra effort during practice and their demonstration of sportsmanship; and performance off the field of play, including academic success, character and exemplary community outreach.

In his first season, Russell paced the Warhawks in all six meets this season, holding the school record in the 5K and the top three times in the 8K distance.

Huntingdon women's basketball loses at Millsaps

The Huntingdon women’s basketball team battled Millsaps evenly Sunday afternoon but came away with a 72-66 loss.

The Lady Hawks led 37-35 at the half and continued to battle the Majors throughout the second half. A Sekal Ousley basket gave Huntingdon (1-1) a 65-61 lead with 2:50 to play, but Millsaps (3-1) closed the game with an 11-1 run. Millsaps’ Shante Morton hit a 3-pointer to cut it to a point with 2:28 left before the Majors hit a layup and sank 6-of-7 free throws to seal the game.

Morgan Crawford led the Lady Hawks with 18 points, five rebounds, three steals, two blocks and two assists. Crawford was 3-for-4 on 3-pointers. Ousley added 14 points and a team-high six rebounds.

Huntingdon men's basketball comes up short at Millsaps

The Huntingdon men’s basketball team fell behind in the first half and couldn’t close the gap in a 74-64 loss at Millsaps on Sunday.

The Majors (3-1) built a 39-13 lead in the first half and led by 19 at the half. The Hawks (0-4) battled back in the second half, outscoring the Majors 42-33. Huntingdon opened the second half with a 15-8 run and cut Millsaps’ lead to 12 points on a pair of Ryan Petty free throws with 15:40 to play in the game.

But the Majors answered and maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the second half.

Jason Varney led Huntingdon with 17 points and eight rebounds.
