AUM softball remains at 7th in latest NAIA top 25 poll

After closing out the regular season with splits against Mobile and Spring Hill, the Auburn Montgomery softball team held on to its seventh position in this week’s NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 poll.

The Warhawks (39-8) received 467 points, an increase of 14 from last week. AUM clinched the regular season Southern States Athletic Conference West Division title over the weekend.

Concordia (Calif.) once again took the top spot with all 21 first-place votes. The Eagles have won their last five games by a combined 51-0 margin.

Lubbock Christian and Lee remained at second and third in the rankings. Cal State San Marcos (No. 4) and Oklahoma City (No. 5) each jumped ahead of sixth-ranked Williams Baptist.

Belhaven (No. 12), Spring Hill (No. 15), Brenau (No. 17) and William Carey (No. 20) give the SSAC a conference-high six programs represented in the poll.

Ten Warhawks earn SSAC baseball postseason honors

The Southern States Athletic Conference held its postseason baseball awards banquet Monday evening to kick off its 2013 SSAC Tournament and 10 Auburn Montgomery student-athletes were honored by the league for their accomplishments this season.

Senior Chad Mansmann was named a first-team all-conference selection, while junior Blake Bearden earned second-team honors. Freshman Brandon Pooler was selected to the league’s All-Freshman team. Mansmann was chosen AUM’s Musco Lighting Champions of Character recipient.

In addition, the Warhawks matched a league-high with seven players named to the All-Academic team. Seniors Eran Franks, Will Ruffin and Branden Kelley, juniors Hayden Hillyer and Josh Thompson, sophomore Bryan Young and redshirt freshman Shelby Nobles were each recognized for their academic success. To qualify, individuals must have a 3.25 cumulative grade point average and have completed at least 24 semester hours of college level work.

AUM's Curtis, William, Zowczak named to SSAC All-Conference Team

Auburn Montgomery women’s tennis players Jade Curtis, Tiffany William and Morgane Zowczak all earned spots on the Southern States Athletic Conference All-Conference team for their regular season performances, the league office announced recently.

Curtis was also named the conference’s player of the year, while Chanel Cunningham represented the Warhawks on the Musco Lighting Champions of Character team. AUM won its seventh straight SSAC title with a 5-2 victory over Brenau last week.

A Saltash, England, native, Curtis is currently rated as the top player in the NAIA by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. She is a perfect 18-0 in singles, extending her overall winning streak to 58 matches overall. Four of her last five wins have come against nationally-ranked opponents, and she has dropped just two sets all season. In doubles, she is 16-2 playing every match from the top position.

AUM's Pinones-Haltenhoff earns fourth SSAC Player of the Week Award

Auburn Montgomery sophomore Nicolas Pinones-Haltenhoff received his fourth Southern States Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week award, the conference announced this afternoon.

He went 3-0 in the conference tournament against Coastal Georgia and Belhaven, picking up an 8-1 win in doubles with partner Miguel Grifol in the championship match against the Blazers.

Entering the NAIA national tournament, he is 18-1 in singles, including an outstanding 8-1 record against ranked opponents from the Division II, Division III and NAIA levels, and 17-2 in doubles. Three of his wins have come against players ranked in the top 10 of Division II.

Pinones-Haltenhoff ends the regular season having won four of the conference’s 11 weekly awards.

Lady Hawks fall to Agnes Scott in GSAC finals

The Huntingdon women’s tennis season came to an end with a 5-4 loss to Agnes Scott in the Great South Athletic Conference tournament finals on Sunday.
 
This was the seventh straight season Huntingdon (18-4) has reached the GSAC championship and the sixth straight season Huntingdon and Agnes Scott have played in the finals. The title is the fifth straight for Agnes Scott.
 
Huntingdon fell behind 2-1 after doubles, with Katie Scott and Micaela White winning 9-7 at No. 2. In singles, Scott (No. 3), Hannah Still (No. 4) and Farrah Mahan (No. 6) each won in straight sets. Taylor Clark fell to four-time GSAC Player of the Year Rachel Storz at No. 1 and Britni Thibodeau (No. 2) and White (No. 5) each lost tough three-set battles.

Huntingdon baseball earns 30th win of the season

The Huntingdon baseball team scored four runs in the first three innings and got by LaGrange 4-3 on Saturday.
 
The win was the 30th of the season for the Hawks (30-9), marking the second straight 30-win season for Huntingdon. It was the second win over LaGrange (22-23) in a three-game series. Huntingdon won the first game 6-5 in 10 innings on Friday night. The two teams will wrap up their series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
Keegan Lambeth, Grant Brown and Trey Smith combined for seven of the Hawks’ 10 hits on Saturday. Lambeth was 3-for-4 with a run scored, Smith was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a run and two stolen bases and Brown was 2-for-4 with a run.
 
Joseph Odom singled to drive in Brown for the first run of the game and Smith drew a bases-loaded walk to score Caleb Astin and give the Hawks a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Six Warhawks earn SSAC All-Conference Recognition

Prior to clinching their ninth straight Southern States Athletic Conference championship, the Auburn Montgomery men’s tennis team was prominently featured in the conference’s regular season awards.

Nicolas Pinones-Haltenhoff was named the SSAC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, while Tim Hewitt earned Newcomer of the Year recognition. Bence Toth, Miguel Grifol, Zinelabidine Jouini and Othmane Lalami joined the pair on the SSAC All-Conference team.

Pinones-Haltenhoff, Jouini and Lalami also made the SSAC All-Academic team, while Hewitt was AUM’s representative on the Musco Lighting Champions of Character team.

Currently ranked as the top singles player in the NAIA by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, Pinones-Haltenhoff has dropped just four sets this season while compiling an 18-1 record. He is 17-2 in doubles, including a 16-0 mark partnering with Grifol.
