Important Voting Deadlines draw near for special election

MONTGOMERY - Absentee voting for the Special Election for City Council District 7 scheduled for Tuesday, March 8, 2011 continues at The Montgomery Election Center.

Registered voters living in City Council District 7 must complete an Absentee Voting Application before receiving a ballot.  An Absentee Voting Application can be obtained by calling 832-1281, downloading the application from www.montgomeryelectioncenter.org  or visiting The Montgomery Election Center at 125 Washington Avenue.

The final day to apply for an Absentee Ballot is Thursday, March 3, 2011.  Absentee voters must hand deliver their ballot to The Montgomery Election Center by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, March 7, 2011 or have the ballot post marked by Monday, March 7, 2011 and it must received at The Election Center by noon on Election Day.

Grayson White Announces Candidacy for District 7 City Council Seat

MONTGOMERY, AL, January 27, 2011 -- Grayson White has earned his place on the ballot for the upcoming District 7 City Council race. The special election will be held on March 8, 2011.  Mr. White qualified on January 25, 2011, with 205 signatures from residents throughout District 7. Qualifying requires a minimum of 200 signatures from those registered to vote in the district.

 

One resident stated, “Mr. White has a strong sense of community, and desires to serve the residents of District 7 by representing their interests on the City Council.  With over 20 years of experience in running a small business, his proven leadership skills, and a love for the community, he’s prepared to work for the residents of District 7 in addressing the issues and moving the area forward.”

Roby reacts to Obama's State of the Union

District 2 Congresswoman Martha Roby issued the following statement after President Barack Obama's State of the Union Address on Tuesday night:

"President Obama has repeatedly stated his intent to rein in spending actions, however, actions speak louder than words. And what we have seen over the last two years are record deficits averaging more than a trillion dollars annually."

 

Governor's Mansion open tonight for free candlelight tours

 

Gov. and Mrs. Bob Riley will open the Governor's Mansion for candlelight tours from 5 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 13 and 14.

"The Governor's Mansion belongs to the people of Alabama and we want to share it with them during this wonderful holiday season," said Mrs. Riley.

Decorators from across the state volunteered their time to adorn the mansion and the neighboring Hill House in Christmas splendor. Choirs from local schools and churches will be singing both nights at the mansion and Hill House.

Mrs. Riley will be also be signing copies of her new book, Alabama's First Ladies and Their Governors, at the Governor's Mansion from 5 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 13 and at the Governor's Mansion gift shop from 5 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 14. Tickets for the tours are available free of charge at the Governor's Mansion gift shop prior to the tours each day.

John Dow wins special election for Montgomery City Council District 6 seat

John Dow has won the special election for Montgomery City Council District 6 with 63.48 percent of the vote. He outpolled opponent Andre Bolding 871-501 in the election to replace council member Willie Cook, who died unexpectedly last summer. Dow, a longtime fixture in city and region politics won even though Bolding had received the endorsement of seven of a dozen candidates that competed in the first election to fill the vacant seat.

Dow is the director of the Millbrook Chamber of Commerce.
