Weekend shooting ends with Montgomery's 24th homicide of 2013

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA)- The Montgomery Police Department is investigating the city's 24th homicide after a woman was shot to death in the 3900 Block of Oak Street over the weekend.

Police officers were called to the home where they found Shamieka A. Brown, 33, dead inside her home.

During the couse of the investigation, officers arrested the victim's husband, Anthony Lamar Brown, 36,

Authorities are not releasing any other details regarding the homicide at this time.

Brown was taken to the Montgomery County Detention Facility where he's being held on a bond of $75,000.

Montgomery firefighter arrested after high speed chase tops 140 mph

LOWNDES CO., AL (WSFA)- A Montgomery firefighter was arrested Friday following a high speed chase through Lowndes County, authorities are confirming.

Alabama State Troopers say 21-year-old James Green of Burkville was riding a sport bike on Alabama 21 when Troopers witnessed him driving recklessly.

Troopers tell WSFA 12 News they clocked Green doing 140 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Authorities attempted to initiate a stop of Green's motorcycle through a high speed chase that stretched a distance of approximately eight miles.

The firefighter now faces attempting to elude law enforcement and reckless endangerment charges. Several traffic citations are also pending including operating the motorcycle without a license plate.

MONTGOMERY, AL - Father Paul McQuillen and Mr. Anthony Brock have been chosen to serve as Principals of St. Jude Educational Institute. Father McQuillen will serve as Principal – Catholic Identity and Athletic Affairs.

Mr. Brock will serve as Principal – Academic, Student and Operational Affairs. McQuillen and Brock are replacing Wanda Twitty who has served as principal for the past four years.

Twitty is retiring at the end of the school year after serving 30 years in the public school system and 8 years at St. Jude.

Father McQuillen is currently the pastor of St. Jude Catholic Church and Director of The City of St. Jude. He attended St. Michael’s College in Vermont where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Father McQuillen received his Master of Divinity from the St. Michael’s College in Canada.

Public gets a peek at the Carver Advanced Manufacturing Program

 

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The public got a look today at Carver High School's Advanced Manufacturing Program at an open house and reception. The program is a public/private collaboration geared towards giving students some hands on experience. There are two parts to the academy - an electrical side and a manufactuing side. Officials hope the academy will help to integrate students into the workforce.

WASHINGTON – Larreka Jackson was sentenced to 48 months in prison for her role in a multi-million dollar conspiracy to use stolen identities to obtain tax refunds, announced George L. Beck, U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama. Jackson was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $721,519.12. In January 2013, Jackson pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to file false claims and to one count of aggravated identity theft.

MPD urging drivers to "Click It or Ticket" this Memorial Day

The Montgomery Police Department is urging drivers to "Click It or Ticket" this Memorial Day holiday as they take part in the national "Click It or Ticket" seat belt enforcement program.

Officers will be out in full force beginning on Monday, May 20 cracking down on motorists who are not belted.

"As we kick off the busy summer
driving season, it's important that everyone buckles up every time they go out,
both day and night – no excuses," said Police Chief Kevin J. Murphy. "Our
officers are prepared to ticket anyone who is not wearing their seat belt –
Click It or Ticket."

According to the U.S. Department of
Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 52 percent of
the 21,253 passenger vehicle occupants killed in 2011 were not wearing their
seat belts at the time of the crash. 

Court orders Lee Co. Sheriff to return Desmonte Leonard to Montgomery Co. Jail

OPELIKA, AL (WSFA)- A Lee County Circuit Court judge is ordering Lee County Sheriff and Auburn Police Department to return accused murder suspect Desmonte Leonard to the Montgomery County Jail.

Leonard's attorneys filed a motion asking the judge to compel Sheriff Jay Jones to return their client to the facility some 50 miles from Lee County. Leonard has been housed in the Montgomery County Jail due to alleged security reasons.

Leonard attorney Jeff Duffey says his client's safety would be at risk should he be moved to the Lee County Jail.

Auburn Police Chief Tommy Dawson previously told WSFA 12 News that special concessions were made with regards to Leonard's housing and transport in order to keep him safe from the general population.

A status hearing for Leonard was held at the Lee County Justice Center at 1:30 Thursday afternoon, but afterward Sheriff Jones refused to return Leonard to Montgomery County.
