Winter Magnet Application Period Starts Tomorrow | News

Montgomery, Ala. — Parents and students who are interested in Montgomery Public Schools magnet programs will soon have an opportunity to apply.

On January 3, the district will begin its winter magnet application period, which will run through January 22, 2013. MPS magnet programs are highly competitive. They cover all grade levels with themes including technology, science, performing arts, accelerated academics and international studies. Each year, the number of openings varies from school to school.

Applications, program fact sheets with tour dates, and transcript request forms will be available at the magnet schools, the Central Office, located at 307 S. Decatur Street, or may be downloaded from the MPS website at www.mps.k12.al.us.

All winter applications are due in by 4:30 p.m. on January 22 to the magnet school for which you are applying ─ not the Central Office. Parents are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the tours being offered at each magnet school in January to learn about program requirements and to determine which program accommodates your child’s needs.

Transcripts are used to determine eligibility for acceptance into the magnet programs. All transcript request forms must be completed and given to the principal or counselor at the school the student currently attends. The transcript must be postmarked or received by the magnet school no later than 4:30 p.m. on January 22.

Interviews and auditions will begin as applications are accepted. Letters will be mailed to kindergarten and first grade applicants notifying them of their status around Feb. 8, 2013. Applicants in grades 2-5, middle and high school will be notified of their acceptance status around March 8, 2013.   

MPS will also offer a second magnet application period in April for those who move to Montgomery County after February 15. Parents need only submit applications to the magnet schools once per year.
