ABLE - Alabama Better Living Expo coming to Montgomery

A recent study released by McGraw-Hill Construction reveals that the market for green home construction is expected to increase five-fold by 2016. According to the study, green homes comprised 17% of the overall residential construction market in 2011 and are expected to grow to between 29% and 38% of the market by 2016. By value, this equates to a five-fold increase, growing from $17 billion in 2011 to $87-$114 billion in 2016, based on the five-year forecast for overall residential construction. 

The study also reported that construction industry professionals saw an even steeper increase in green home remodeling.

Hours for the event are 8am – 6pm Friday and Saturday, February 17-18th and Noon until 5pm Sunday, February 19th.

The Alabama Fruit and Vegetable Conference is set for February

The 2012 Alabama Fruit & Vegetable Conference will be February 10 and 11 on the Auburn University campus. Sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and the Alabama Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, this annual conference attracts more than 250 producers, crop consultants and industry representatives.

The conference will open at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 10 at the Ham Wilson Livestock Arena. Friday’s program features a number of educational talks and hands-on educational sessions that will be conducted at the Old Agronomy Farm in addition to the Ham Wilson Arena. Topics include hoop house crop production, use of cover crops, sprayer calibration and irrigation system design among others.

Longleaf Pine restoration grant available to homeowners

Longleaf Pine restoration grant available to homeowners

The Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF) of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) is currently accepting applications through its Landowner Incentive Program (LIP) to continue longleaf pine restoration efforts in Alabama. The grant was awarded through a partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and will be made available to qualifying landowners for longleaf pine restoration on private lands.
 
Landowners are encouraged to submit applications to receive assistance with the site preparation, seedlings, planting, native grass restoration and/or exotic control costs. For landowners to be considered eligible to receive funding, the property must be within the historic range of longleaf pine in Alabama, or contain suitable soils to support longleaf pine.

The Montgomery State Farmers Market will host its first "Farmers Market Day Christmas" celebration this Saturday, December 17, 2011, from 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The Farmer's Market is ready for Christmas, are you?

The Farmers Market has many last minute holiday gifts choices including poinsettias, baked goods, pecans, Bates turkeys, fresh wreaths and garland to decorate your home, and all types of fresh produce including satsumas. During the "Farmers Market Day Christmas" celebration, area arts and crafts vendors will offer many unique, one-of-a-kind gifts as well.

Children are encouraged to come visit Santa Clause on his John Deere tractor compliments of Montgomery's SunSouth dealer. Santa will be ready to hear those Christmas wishes! Parents, please bring your camera to capture this special moment.

Farm-to-Fork Food Invasion begins tonight at Hampstead

The culinary invasion strikes Alabama again at the second annual food and drink festival, which starts tonight, November 11th. Celebrating fresh, local and seasonal Southern cuisine, the regional Farm-to-Fork Food Invasion will be in Hampstead, an internationally-recognized sustainable community in Montgomery, Ala. All proceeds from the weekend festivities help fund children’s educational programs at the Hampstead Institute’s non-profit community farms: Hampstead Farms and the new Hampstead Institute Downtown Farm. 

The invasion begins tonight at 7:00 p.m. with a private Pig Roast Preview Party featuring the culinary talents of Ham and High’s Chef Joe Wolfson, a Food & Wine People’s Best New Chef nominee and host of Montgomery’s first Outstanding in the Field dinner on Oct. 13, 2011.

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA)  - The Hampstead Institute is hosting a "Gathering in the Garden" courtyard fundraiser benefiting the Hampstead Institute Downtown Farm at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Stephen Davidson.

On Sunday, September 25th, guests will enjoy a beautiful evening outdoors complete with wine and hors dʼoeuvres provided by Roux restaurant, fall produce at a Hampstead Institute farmstand and “A Time to Plant” book
signing with the nationally-recognized author, gardener & interior designer James Farmer.

Tickets $50 per person and limited to the first 75. Please purchase tickets at www.hampsteadinstitute.org  100% of the ticket proceeds will benefit the youth education programs at the new downtown farm.
