Auburn PD: Two arrested for cigarette and alcohol theft | Crime
On Thursday, November 1, 2012 the Auburn Police Division arrested Jamie D. James, age 39, of Montgomery, Alabama, and Marquette L. Phillips, age 29, of Mathews, Alabama, and charged each with two counts of Burglary 3rd Degree and two counts of Theft of Property 2nd Degree. Their arrests stem from the investigation of two business burglaries that occurred earlier this same date. At approximately 2:56 a.m. patrol officers responded to an alarm at a convenience store located in the 1700 block of Shug Jordan Parkway. There they discovered a glass door broken out and what appeared to be a large quantity of cigars and cigarettes missing. About 20 minutes later officers responded to another alarm at a beverage store located in the 1100 block of South Donahue Drive. There they discovered a glass door broken out and what appeared to be multiple bottles of alcohol missing. The suspects fled both scenes before officers arrived. Minutes later patrol officers stopped a dark green Ford F150 pickup truck on South College Street as it got onto Interstate 85. The truck matched the description of a vehicle believed to have been involved in a business burglary the day before. In that case a convenience store located in the 2400 block of South College Street was broken into at approximately 3 a.m. and a large quantity of cigarettes were stolen. The driver, Phillips, and passenger, James, were taken into custody after property stolen from the two businesses on Thursday was located inside the vehicle. The two men were transported to the Lee County Detention Center where they are currently being held. The investigation continues and other charges on Phillips and James are pending.
