Quidditch Tournament re-scheduled due to inclement weather | Community Spirit

Montgomery, AL- Due to inclement weather in the 24 hours leading up to the Inaugural Quidditch Tournament and Festival, it will now be MOVED to Saturday, May 4, 2013 to coincide with the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts’ Flimp Festival.

The City of Montgomery,  Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts and Alabama Shakespeare Festival will host the event in the Blount Cultural Park on Saturday, May 4, 2013 from 10 AM to 2 PM.   

Working in partnership, the City of Montgomery, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts located in Montgomery’s Blount Cultural Park, are pleased to host Montgomery’s first Quidditch Tournament and Festival in conjunction with the Museum’s Flimp Festival.

The event has been organized to increase public awareness about the Blount Cultural Park, the charities, and to raise financial support for their programs.

Quidditch Information:

Quidditch is a fictional sport created by British author J. K. Rowling for the Harry Potter series of novels. It is described as a rough, but very popular semi-contact sport, played by wizards and witches around the world. Matches are played between two teams of seven players riding flying broomsticks, using four balls and six elevated ring-shaped goals three on each side of the Quidditch field. In the Harry Potter universe, Quidditch holds a fervent following similar to the position that soccer holds as a globally popular sport.

The sport has been adapted under the name of Muggle Quidditch (or simply “Quidditch”) to the real world and its players are referred to as muggles. Since at least 2003, Harry Potter fans have played ball games resembling the Harry Potter sport. In the United States, teams from more than 200 colleges are affiliated with the International Quidditch Association and play tournaments.

The day begins with a spectacular Opening Ceremony that will kick of a magical day. Food and drink inspired by the books will also be available for purchase.

Flimp Festival Information:
Enjoy an old favorite on Saturday, May 4 at the Annual Flimp Festival held at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.

Although there will be different activities, many of the old favorites will still be present: artists, art making, chalk art, entertainment, food, and many other family activities.

Those activities will include:

Art Making
Visit the art studios and make unique works of art.

Artists in Action
Artists making art. See art created by professional artists, then try your hand at making something special related to each artist’s work.

Flimp Treasure Hunt
Join the exciting “Discover the Treasure” hunt held in the Rotunda. This event invites children and adults to find the correct answers to clues about the artwork in the Museum galleries. Win fabulous prizes donated by area merchants.

Flimp Chalk
Student artists and adults are invited to transform the street into a chalk gallery. First, second, and third place ribbons and prizes will be awarded for each of the following four categories: elementary school (1st-5th), middle school (6th-8th), high school (9th-12th), and adult. The Museum provides chalk, parking lot space, and event organization. Artists provide inspiring compositions. To participate, call the Education Department for an application at 334.240.4365.

Flimp Music
Visitors can enjoyparticipating in one of the interactive performances or as lively background music while partaking in the art-making projects.

Lunch during FLIMP
For patrons interested in lunch during FLIMP, Jennie Weller of Café M will be serving lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The fun begins at 10 AM. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children under 12, and FREE to Museum members. Special group rates are available. Proceeds benefit the Museum’s acquisition, exhibition, and education programs.
