AUM celebrates Confucius Institute grand opening today

A delegation of 13 Chinese dignitaries will visit Montgomery on Nov. 2 for the grand opening of Auburn University at Montgomery's new Confucius Institute. The daylong celebration will feature a variety of cultural exhibits and performances – from calligraphy demonstrations to a hibachi-style cooking show. The following festivities are free and open to the public:

  • 9 a.m., Taylor Center 230 – Exhibit Hall opens, featuring Chinese art and artifacts.
  • 9:30-11:30 a.m., Goodwyn Hall 109 – Dedication Ceremony.
  • 11:40 a.m., Quad – Dragon Dance.
  • 2:30-4 p.m., Goodwyn Hall 109 – Cultural performances, including traditional Chinese music and dance.
  • 4 p.m., Taylor Center 221 – Hibachi-style cooking demonstration, featuring exotic ingredients like squid and Mandarin fish.

"We are very pleased and honored to welcome a Confucius Institute to its new home at Auburn Montgomery," said Chancellor John G. Veres III.

The Alabama Talent Company is holding a state-wide vocal talent competition in order to discover, develop and promote musical talent from the State of Alabama.

Registration for Alabama Talent Hunt 2012-2013 is going on now and will last through the end of November. 

The Alabama Talent Company will be in Montgomery, hosting a workshop and audition on Saturday, November 3rd from 2 until 5 p.m. at Landmark Church, located at 1800 Halcyon Blvd.

Huntingdon College presents Halloween-themed organ concert

The Huntingdon College Department of Music will present performances by  American Guild of Organists members in a Halloween-themed organ concert Tuesday, October 30, at 7:30 p.m. in Ligon Chapel, Flowers Hall.  The concert, which is free and open to the public, is part of the College's Harald Rohlig Organ Recital Series.  

Featured performers include Jim Sadie, Hunter Mills, Kelley Garrett, and Gene Montgomery. 

Music will include selections from "Phantom of the Opera"; Fantasia in g minor, by J.S. Bach; "Old Hundredth"; the Addams Family Theme; the Alfred Hitchcock Theme; "Piece Heroique," by Cesar Franck; and "Golliwogg's Cakewalk," by Claude Debussy.

The Harald Rohlig Organ Recital Series is named in honor of the long-time professor of music and renowned organist, now professor of music emeritus, who has been a part of the Huntingdon music program since 1955.

Local band “The Freedom Sound” offers free concert to celebrate release of first EP

For immediate release–Members of the public are invited to a free concert and evening of worship with local Contemporary Christian band The Freedom Sound on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. in Wesley Hall at Frazer United Methodist Church. The band is celebrating the release of their first EP, “Set Free”, featuring original music and adaptations written by members of the group and recorded in studios in Atlanta.

The Montgomery Chamber Music Organization's 2012-2013 season begins tomorrow night

The Montgomery Chamber Music Organization's 2012-2013 season begins tomorrow night with a performance by Performers of Westchester.

The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 11th in the Wilson Auditorium at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.  There will be an opening reception following the concert.

Holocaust exhibit opening Monday at Troy University Montgomery campus

Troy University will launch its Year of Holocaust Remembrance with a lecture and reception on Monday, Oct. 1, at the Montgomery Campus, celebrating the opening of the exhibit “Darkness Into Life: Alabama Holocaust Survivors Through Photography and Art.”
 
The reception will be held at 6 p.m. inside Whitley Hall, room 141.
 
Photographer Becky Seitel, whose work is featured in the exhibit, will discuss the development of “Darkness Into Life,” which tells the stories of 20 Alabama residents who were Holocaust survivors.
 
TROY Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., will deliver opening remarks.
 
Admission is free and open to the public, and members of the media are invited to cover this event.
 
“Darkness Into Life: Alabama Holocaust Survivors Through Photography and Art,” is on loan from the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center and will be on display at the Montgomery Campus from Oct. 1-Nov. 30.
