ASU's Theatre Department presents Shakespeare's 'King Richard III'

ASU's Theatre Department presents Shakespeare's 'King Richard III'

Alabama State University's Department of Theatre Arts will bring to life one of classical theater's most beloved villains in Shakespeare's “King Richard III.” The play is directed by ASU faculty member Brian Martin and runs Nov. 7-17 at 7 p.m. nightly in ASU's Leila Barlow Theatre.

In “King Richard III,” the medieval king of England cuts through politics, power-mongers and even his own family to ascend and wear the crown. Before he makes his last moves to seal his position and enjoy the fruits of his ill-gotten gain, something stirs in him that stops him in his tracks -- his conscience.

The play is based on the same King Richard III whose remains were supposedly unearthed in England last month.Experts stress that the remains must be subjected to rigorous DNA testing, to be undertaken over the next three months, to be sure if it is him.

Dwight Yoakam in Concert

Dwight Yoakam captured the imagination of traditionalists and new listeners alike by giving hillbilly music a modern twist. Born in Kentucky but based in Los Angeles, Yoakam debuted with a twangy cover of Johnny Horton's "Honky Tonk Man," which led him to the ACM's 1986 Top New Male Vocalist trophy. In all, Yoakam landed 14 Top 10 hits – some he wrote ("I Sang Dixie") and others he revived (Elvis Presley's "Little Sister"). Along with acclaimed albums and music videos, Yoakam proudly partnered with Buck Owens on the endearing 1988 duet, "Streets of Bakersfield."
