Rosa Parks Museum to host Mobile Studio art event downtown on Saturday

Troy University’s Rosa Parks Museum will host a public art project in downtown Montgomery on Saturday, Jan. 19, that will bring to life the “wishes” of local students.

The museum will host a Mobile Studio event from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Court Square where artist Daniel Neil, curator of the Rosa Parks Museum, and Jocelyn Zanzot, co-director of the Mobile Studio and Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at Auburn University, will lead students and members of the public in the creation of silkscreen posters inspired by “birthday wishes” for Parks’ upcoming 100th birthday.

Admission to the event is free and members of the public are invited to observe and take part in the creation of the posters, which will be displayed as part of the museum’s 100th Birthday Celebration for Rosa Parks on Feb.

Join the Alabama Department of Archives and History tomorrow, January 17th, at noon as ArchiTreats: Food for Thought begins another year of informative talks on Alabama history at the Alabama Department of Archives and History.

Dan Carter will present "Segregation Forever": The Speech that Launched George Wallace's National Career.

A number of individuals have claimed responsibility for ghostwriting George Wallace’s most famous speech, his 1963 Inaugural Address in which he promised “Segregation Now, Segregation Tomorrow, Segregation Forever!” In part this talk will be a discussion of the various sources from which the final speechwriter, former Klansman Asa Carter, shaped his remarks.

BTW Showcase is this Friday!

Booker T. Washington Magnet High School will present Showcase 2013, on Friday, January 11 at 7 p.m. at the Davis Theatre. The event will feature incredible performances and presentations from each of BTW’s creative magnets which include: the Creative and Performing Arts Center, Academy for Communication Arts, Center for Advanced Technology, and the Center for Law.

The community is invited to attend. A suggested donation of $5 will be asked at the door.

Glenn Miller Holiday concert set for December 20th

The 31st annual Glenn Miller Holiday Concert is sure to spread some holiday cheer while benefitting the Montgomery Area Food Bank.

People coming to the free concert at the Davis Theatre, Dec. 20, are encouraged to bring a canned good item for the food bank. Concert starts at 7 p.m., doors open at 6:30 p.m., seating is first come, first serve and food donation boxes will be at the door. More than 2,200 pounds of food was collected at last year’s concert.

The U.S. Air Force “Airmen of Note” will perform big band swing music and holiday favorites in the style of renowed band leader Glenn Miller, who was stationed at Maxwell for a short time in 1942.

Former Air University commander (1981-84) retired Lt. Gen. Charles Cleveland initiated the concert tradition as a tribute to Glenn Miller in 1982. Miller, a U.S. Army Air Corps captain, and his band, “Maxwell’s Rythmaires,” performed a Christmas concert on the base in an aircraft hangar in 1942.

Troy University Art & Design students exhibit senior theses

Twelve Troy University art and design students are showcasing their work in Malone Gallery during the Fall Senior Thesis Exhibition that runs through Dec. 14.

The senior projects are required for graduation and each reflects the students' personal interpretations of the world around them. The exhibit, which is free and open to the public daily from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. runs through Dec. 14.

A reception honoring the seniors is slated for 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Dec. 13 in Malone Gallery.

Seniors exhibiting are:

  • Hillary Andrews, a design, technology and innovation major from Montgomery, whose mixed media project focuses on branding and marketing for Head on the Door, a local Montgomery lounge.

'Tinsel & Tunes' Cabaret set for December 17th

ASF’s Tinsel & Tunes Cabaret, A Fundraiser for the Alabama Shakespeare Festival & Montgomery Ballet is set for Monday, December 17 at 7:30 p.m.

Ebenezer Scrooge and Bob Cratchit will be bumping heads again at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival—and it’s all for a good cause. Tinsel & Tunes, a special fundraiser in a cabaret setting to benefit ASF and the Montgomery Ballet will take place on Monday, December 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Octagon theatre. Two headlining performers from ASF’s production of A Christmas Carol, Rodney Clark and Billy Sharpe, will serve as the evening’s hosts. Clark is performing as Scrooge and Sharpe is performing as Cratchit.

Other members from the A Christmas Carol cast as well as dancers from the Montgomery Ballet will be performing holiday songs and dances and for Tinsel & Tunes.
