City begins work to demolish the old Cloverland Garden Apartments

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The City of Montgomery started work today to demolish a cluster of apartment buildings that was condemned nearly six years ago.

The city today started demolishing what used to be the Cloverland Garden Apartment Complex on E. Delano Ave. between Court Street and Norman Bridge Road.

The original plan for the property had been to allow city fire crews to use the building for practice burns, however, the discovery of asbestos in the structures meant crews had to abate the asbestos before the city could demolish the old units.

At this time, the owner of the property is not involved in the actions being taken by the city - they have abandoned the property and are essentially defunct according to city leaders.

The bank holding the mortgage on the property, Ever Bank, has not officially foreclosed on the property. They entered into an agreement with the city to pay $210,000 for city crews to demolish the property.

Hi, I am Gracie. I am four years old, I am a retriever /lab mix, and I just recently lost my home. I was brought to the shelter because my owner decided that he had too many animals. I am not exactly sure why I was chosen to find a new home. Anyway, I am putting my best paw forward and trying to find a new home. I have all of my shots, I am heartworm negative, I have a microchip, and I have already been spayed. I have a pretty black coat and a white chest. I already have very nice doggie manners and I am calm. I could fit into a house that was very active or one that wasn’t. When you look at my picture, do you see my sad eyes? I can’t help it, I am a little sad. I am hoping that my new owners will come soon and my eyes will be smiling again.

Montgomery's Child Protect reacts to horrific Tallassee sex abuse case

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA)- In the 12 years Jannah
Bailey has been running Child Protect in Montgomery, she can't recall anything
so vile, so shocking as to the charges against 31-year old Steven Conrad of
Tallassee.

"As of a mother and
grandmother I can't even fathom what goes on in people's heads," said
Bailey.

Conrad faces more than
80 counts of sexual abuse, rape and sodomy against children under 12-years old.
Tallassee police say some were children of the women Conrad dated.
Investigators say the abuse started 11 years ago and some of the victims were
abused more than once.

Today, Bailey's staff
interviewed 6 of the 8 victims. It was part investigative to help law
enforcement and part healing, pointing the children to the road of recovery.

"Are there going to
be scars and memories? Absolutely. This now becomes part of who these children
are," Bailey said.

Fans dash to 'Dega for races

PRATTVILLE, AL (WSFA)- It's a weekend many look forward to...especially folks like Becky Rowlen.

"We sell a lot of gas, beer, ice. Haha."

She works at a service station just off I-65 in Prattville--which happens to be a main thoroughfare for race goers.

"They're happy, they're excited, we're excited for them to be here," says Rowlen.

She says holidays and big events are typically a busy time for her. The business prepares in advance.

"We have our gas trucks come and fill up our tanks so we're ready for the fuel."

While many have already make the trek, fans like Brandon Thomas don't leave until Sunday.

"I haven't been in a few years, but I'm really excited to go this time. It's the first time I've been in a while," says Thomas.

He's sitting close to the track and admits he's hesitant, given the recent crash in Daytona.
